Apply for Marriage License

The county commissioners have authorized us per Resolution to suspend the recording of real estate documents, the issuance of notary oaths, and marriage licenses at 4:30 pm every day.

The fee for a marriage license is $60 (no personal checks). A marriage license purchased in the Register of Deeds office of any county in NC is valid statewide. Applicants may be married anywhere in NC but the license must be returned to the county of issuance. The license is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance.

Applicants 21 years of Age or Older

All applicants must provide identification and Social Security card:

  • Valid Driver's License or photo ID card issued by a U.S. Government Agency. (License will be issued in the name as it appears on identification.
    • Note: A matricular consular or other similar document, other than a valid passport issued by a consulate or embassy of another country, is not acceptable for use in determining a person's actual identity or residency. NC. Session Law 2015-294 or a Valid Passport issued by U.S. or a Foreign Country.
  • Proof of Social Security Number (Social Security Card, W-2, paystub, or other legal document that reflects applicants entire Social Security Number)
    • If an applicant has not been issued a Social Security Number, then you must provide a notarized affidavit that states "I have not been issued a Social Security Number by the U.S. government and I am not eligible to obtain one." ITIN numbers are not acceptable proof of a Social Security Number.
  • Date of divorce or date of death of previous spouse is required when applicable. If the death occurred or divorce became final within the past year, written proof is required.

Applicants 18 to 20 Years of Age

Must also provide a certified copy of a birth certificate in addition to all the requirements listed above.

Applicants 16 to 18 Years of Age

Must have consent from a parent with full custody or both parents with joint custody or a person, agency, or institution having legal custody or serving as legal guardian of the applicant. Documentation of custody, if applicable, must be presented at the time of application along with valid IDs of parents. In addition to all the requirements listed above.

Persons over 16 years of age and under 18 years of age may marry a person no more than four years older.
