On May 10, 2023, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputy on Finch Farm Rd., Trinity, was assisting a citizen with a flat tire when he was made aware that there was a subject slumped over in the driver's seat of a vehicle at the gas pumps at Sheetz. Upon approach, the vehicle was running and the deputy observed two nearly empty beer bottles in the cup holders of the center console. The deputy was able to turn the vehicle off and remove the key. Multiple attempts were made before the male, later identified as Nicholas Delane Jones, awoke with some level of consciousness but not responsive to questions. Jones was extremely intoxicated and had to be assisted from the vehicle for further investigation.
Additional deputies and North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) responded to assist with the investigation. A search of the vehicle was conducted and illegal narcotics, marijuana, cocaine and paraphernalia were located. Jones was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Impaired by NCSHP and received a $1,500 secured bond. He was also charged with Felony possession of schedule I controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to ½ oz., misdemeanor simple possession schedule II controlled substance, misdemeanor consume alcoholic beverage under the age of 21, misdemeanor driving while license revoked not impaired, misdemeanor resisting public officer, and misdemeanor open container alcohol and issued a $4,500 secured bond. A first appearance was set for May 11, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
