On May 14, 2025, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on US Hwy 64, Ramseur, but the vehicle failed to stop and continued eastbound on Hwy 64 into Chatham County, where the pursuit was cancelled.
While completing an incident report, a motor vehicle accident was reported in Randolph County on Hwy 64 E. involving the same vehicle, and deputies proceeded to the scene of the accident. The driver was identified at the scene as Austin Dale Layton. Due to injuries, Layton was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
A warrant was sworn before a magistrate for Layton and granted for the charges of felony flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle, misdemeanor speeding, misdemeanor reckless driving with wanton disregard, and misdemeanor fail to heed lights or siren.
On May 21, 2025, Layton was located, arrested, and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where he was served his warrant. He was issued a $5,000 secured bond, and a first appearance was set for May 22, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
