On August 21, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Hillsboro St., Staley, in reference to a burglary in progress. The caller advised that upon arrival home, a UTV was located in the driveway, which led the homeowner to believe that someone may be inside the residence. Deputies cleared the residence and did not locate anyone. Deputies identified the owner of the UTV based on company logos, made contact, and confirmed they were missing a UTV.
An additional resident of the address arrived and noticed that his motorcycle was missing from where he had last parked it.
During the investigation, a call for service came in on Ferguson Rd., Ramseur, regarding locating a motorcycle matching the description of the one taken from Hillsboro St. Deputies responded, located, and arrested Benjamin Hunter Bowman. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for two counts felony larceny of motor vehicle, felony breaking and/or entering, and larceny after break/enter. Bowman was disruptive during the process and the magistrate held Bowman in criminal contempt for five days and did not issue a bond due to Bowman currently be out on pre-trial release. A first appearance was set for August 22, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
