On November 22, 2023, registered sex offender Robert Kawelo was released from prison. By law a sex offender must report in person within three business days of release from a penal institution to advise of their address. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, and offices closed, Kawelo should have reported in person to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office by 5 pm on November 29, 2023, but failed to do so. Kawalo violated the sex offender registry guidelines and a warrant for arrest was sought for Kawelo for felony fail to register as sex offender.
On January 25, 2024, Kawelo was located, arrested, and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the warrant. He was issued a $500,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for January 26, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
