On March 31, 2026, Detectives with the Criminal Apprehension Team (CAT) initiated a traffic stop on Steele St., Asheboro. The driver, later identified as Jose Daniel Vargas, refused to pull over initially. When CAT Detectives attempted to detain him, he began to resist but was taken into custody.
He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. The magistrate found probable cause for misdemeanor resisting a public officer, fail to yield to blue lights and siren, and misdemeanor injury to personal property. During the booking process, he was found to have methamphetamine and paraphernalia in his possession. Additional charges were served for felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of a controlled substance in jail/prison, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a $100,000 secured bond, and a court date was set for April 1, 2026, in Randolph County District Court.
